The Everett Farmers Market was started in 1994 by Marie Brayman with a vision and just a few vendors in an empty, unpaved lot just west of what is now Lowes Hardware store. Marie had the determination and patience to get the market off the ground and nurture it through its early growing pains. Granted, she had the help of a lot of community minded people. Our old time vendors remember standing on large rocks in the rain and mud, with water running between their feet, waiting for customers to find the market. |
When the Port of Everett agreed to allow the market onto port property, things began to really jump forward. To begin with, the parking lot was unpaved, and there was no water for flower vendors or electricity for cooking or music amplification. Feet were still wet, hauling water and cooking were problems, but we had a great view and the possibility of becoming a DESTINATION. |
Since those early days, the Port of Everett has paved the lot, added electricity, added access to fresh water, and even added 220 volt electricity at our request, all to help make the market a success. The Port Staff has worked with the Market Managers and the market's neighbors to allow everyone to share parking and facilities in a way that lets everyone be successful. The Port Commissioners have been able to directly contribute to the quality of life of the Everett community by encouraging and enhancing the Everett Farmers Market. |
Our market is strongly supported by Lombardi's Restaurant to the south, and Scuttlebutt's Brewery to the north, in spite of the extra attention required of them by market activity. |
Inger and Tone Hutton became the Market Masters June 2002. We love being part of the market. During our tenure we have attempted to increase the variety and quality of produce and products being offered. |
We have added music entertainment, a picnic area near our Ready-to-Eat vendors, a Market Information booth, and produce vouchers for qualifying Women-with-small-children and seniors. We have made a major effort to market the Market to keep the customer base vibrant. |
The Market is doing well. Vendors, customers, landlords and managers all count it a success. |
It's great to play a part in bringing healthy fresh food to more and more customers and to offer live music, picnic lunches and fun shopping every summer Sunday. |
